The ministry of Jesus Christ depends upon ordinary, faithful followers like you and me to get things done.
He turns to the people and tells them that he has baptized them with water, but wait, there's more!
But God saw how he could be even more effective in bringing the Good News to the Gentiles.
And that's the message of the cross. Jesus came to unite a divided people, to give direction to a people who were lost in plain sight.
It's the pain and unpleasantness that helps us focus on what wrong needs to be righted, that injustice that needs to be rectified.
Because he lived as a man, human beings, people like you and me, know that he fully understands our experiences, our struggles, what we are going through.
We, like John, are not the source of God's light; we merely reflect the light.
He's asking what kind of life do you want to be leading when Jesus returns? What do you want Jesus to catch you in the act of doing?
Knowing that our future is secure is all we need to know to face the bleakness of tomorrow.
